Complex Trauma Therapy
At The Flatiron Center
We treat complex trauma differently.
We don’t see you as defined by your personal traumas.
We help you redefine those experiences, and break free from beliefs and assumptions that keep you trapped in shame and guilt.
Do you feel like something’s off about you, but can't explain why?
Do you see yourself as broken, damaged and unfixable from events in your past that you’re powerless to change?
Do you find yourself stuck in the same dysfunctional relationships, asking yourself how you’ve gotten here once again?
Do you feel overwhelmed, disconnected or depressed?
Each of us experiences trauma — especially complex trauma — differently. Some of us become mired in it, constantly revisiting it or even repeating it. Some of us try to push it away and act like it never happened, only to find it impacting our thoughts, moods and actions anyway.
At TFC, we’re here to help you understand not just what happened to you in the past, but how you’re still trying to make sense of it today.
Our approach opens the door to healing, change and growth.
Clients Come To Us When They:
Feel stuck, beholden to, or permanently changed by events in their past
Experience unwanted and intrusive memories of distressing events
Unexpectedly spiral into guilt and shame
Feel anxious, vigilant or avoidant
Repeatedly get stuck in the same problematic relationships
Can’t sleep — or even relax
Feel disconnected from others and themselves
See themselves as broken or irreparably damaged
Trauma — and our reactions to it — can take many forms, which is why our therapy is not one size fits all.
We’re here to help you understand not just what happened to you in the past, but how it shapes your experience of yourself in the present.
Complex Trauma Therapy at TFC
First of all, we’re not going to force it. We understand that sharing your story isn’t easy, and often brings up painful memories, embarrassment, guilt and shame.
So we first look to build safety and trust. We want to give you a chance to see that your TFC therapist is not here to judge you, but to understand you with honesty, curiosity and compassion.
As therapy unfolds, we'll also help you understand yourself. When you’re ready to share difficult memories, the point is not just to revisit them. The point is that through sharing them, we can help you come to see them differently, and this opens the door to real healing.
Modalities We Use
-
When it comes to trauma, “the body keeps the score.” Somatic work helps you recognize physical reactions, regulate your nervous system, and feel more grounded during stressful moments.
-
While the body keeps the score, the mind reads the scoreboard. ACT helps you make room for difficult thoughts and emotions without letting them control you. Instead of fighting your experience, you can both accept and grow from it.
-
Expanding on the mind’s role, CBT helps identify assumptions and preconceptions that shape your perceptions of traumatic experiences. Ultimately, thinking differently opens the door to feeling differently.
-
At TFC, our approach is inherently person-centered. We believe better understanding yourself helps create lasting change. Therapy becomes a place to explore your experiences with curiosity rather than judgment.
-
Dynamically informed therapy helps expand self-awareness. It’s not about the past determining our present. It’s about enriching our understanding of ourselves and our present-day psychology.
The goal isn't simply to revisit the past, but to help you experience your past, present and future differently.
Trauma Doesn’t Break You
And you don’t need to be fixed. No matter how you’ve coped with traumatic experiences in the past, we know you’ve been doing your best, in spite of how painful that’s been. We’re here to help you reconnect with your inner strength and resilience.

About The Flatiron Center
We're a New York City-based practice built around understanding people, not just diagnoses.
All of our clinicians are Ph.D. level psychologists. They have advanced training in OCD, anxiety, trauma, attachment, and relationship concerns. Each therapist brings a unique perspective while sharing the same commitment to individually tailored, evidence-based care.
While many clinics begin with symptoms, we begin by understanding how you experience yourself, your relationships, and your world. That perspective shapes every recommendation we make and every treatment plan we create.
Availability: We provide in-person therapy in New York City, and telehealth sessions across New York state.
